Veteran Real Life Stories - "Dan"

Dan's story is a moving testament to the power of hope and resilience. As a 13-year-old, Dan was dropped off at a boys' reform school by his parents, where he spent over four years laboring on a farm, working tirelessly every day. At 17, Dan enlisted in the Army and spent nearly a decade in service, including tours in Vietnam. After an honorable discharge, Dan experienced the harsh reality of being a Vietnam Veteran and gradually became homeless. For over 20 years, Dan endured life on the streets, sleeping under bridges and park benches, until Soldier On and Dan found one another.

Today, Dan thrives in a small, self-contained apartment at Soldier On. He is a shining example of success, living substance-free and independently. Dan, though somewhat shy, is passionate about NASCAR, as evidenced by the numerous model cars proudly displayed in his apartment.

In an upcoming VetKind mission, we aim to send Dan to a NASCAR event, where he will have the opportunity to meet drivers and collect autographed pictures for his cherished collection. Dan's story has come full circle: his apartment at Soldier On is located in the same building that once housed the boys' reform school where he was dropped off at age 13. The building has undergone several transformations, from a working boys' home to a state police training facility, before being abandoned, reclaimed, and refurbished by Soldier On.

When we first visited Dan in his apartment, he directed our gaze towards a green fence across the street. He recounted that for four years, he walked through that fence every morning to milk cows at the farm.

Help us send Dan to a NASCAR event as a token of our gratitude. Visit the donate page and make a contribution, then encourage your network to do the same by sending out an email. Together, we can extend a special THANK YOU to Dan and countless other veterans, reminding them that their sacrifices and bravery will never be forgotten.
